Differin Cream Or Gel (Prescription)

Strength Treatment for Severe Acne

PROS:

  • Effective for all types of acne
  • Relatively few side effects
  • More tolerable than other retinoids

CONS:

  • Mild discomfort may occur at first
  • Not available in a generic version

Specifications

Type of Treatment: Topical cream or gel
Prescription Required? YES
Active Ingredient: Adapalene
Possible Side Effects: Redness, burning, and peeling
Frequency of Use: As prescribed

Experts say that Differin dramatically improves acne, especially when combined with other topical treatments, namely benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. Differin is a prescription-strength retinoid, which critics say causes less harsh side effects than other prescription treatments. Researchers also suggest that Differin is more tolerable than other retinoids, tretinoin (Retin-A, Renova) and tazarotene (Tazorac). All retinoids can cause mild side effects, such as burning, peeling, and redness of skin, but experts agree that these effects tend to diminish with continued use. Reviewers say that while Differin is effective for all types of acne, those with mild cases may see similar results by simply using an over-the-counter treatment such as Neutrogena Acne Stress Control 3-in-1 Hydrating Acne Treatment or the Proactiv Solution 3-Step System.

Proactiv Solution 3-Step System(Non- Prescription)
Top Rated- Acne-Treatment Kit

PROS:

  • Cleanser and lotion contain 2.5% benzoyl peroxide
  • Repairing lotion is full of anti-irritants

CONS:

  • “Club” approach to sales
  • Toner contains glycolic acid

Reviewers say that Proactiv Solutions 3-Step System is pricey compared to other benzoyl peroxide treatments, but that it works. Experts are pleased that the Renewing Cleanser and Repairing Lotion contain 2.5% benzoyl peroxide, which may cause less irritation than higher strengths but is still effective. The Revitalizing Toner contains glycolic acid, a skin exfoliant, but the most credible experts explain that it is not as effective as salicylic acid in treating acne. In fact, critics recommend using a salicylic acid product, like Neutrogena Acne Stress Control 3-in-1 Hydrating Acne Treatment (*est. $8/2 ounces), in conjunction with Proactiv for the best results. Consumers have mixed opinions about Proactiv. While some say that Proactiv is the only product that works for them, others complain that it irritated their skin and made acne worse. Several users prefer to use just one or two products in the system, though favorites vary from one person to the next.

Nature’s Cure 2-Part Treatments contain an FDA regulated topical drug and traditional homeopathic medication. Homeopathic tablet and capsule ingredients and their indications are based on traditional homeopathic evidence. Nature’s Cure believes that homeopathic treatments are safe, all-natural alternatives that really work – so we’re on a mission to educate people about the benefits of homeopathy. Read more about the principles of homeopathy below to find how homeopathic treatments are different from traditional over-the-counter and prescription medicines.

Mode of Action – Based on the principal of “like cures like”, homeopathic treatments use micro-doses of ingredients that would trigger the symptoms to be treated if ingested in large amounts. Homeopaths believe that dilute ingredients activate the body’s defenses to fight back. With minute doses, the risk of toxicity issues and harmful side effects in homeopathic treatments is minimized, unlike conventional drugs, which use chemicals to overpower a disease or symptom.
Safe – The FDA regulates homeopathic products as drugs to assure compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) regulations for safety, purity and stability. Ingredients used in homeopathic treatments must be listed in the US Homeopathic Pharmacopeia as safe for homeopathic use.
Proven – FDA policy permits homeopathic treatments to make claims based on traditional homeopathic evidence, called provings, which establish the treatment profile of an ingredient. The first recorded provings were published in 1796, based on extensive observation of volunteer subjects. With the use of control groups, methodical and quantitative measures and some of the first applications of statistics in medicine, these early experiments contributed to the development of the modern-day clinical trial.
All-natural – All ingredients are minerals, herbs or other natural extracts diluted for homeopathic use. The number preceding an “X” indicates the serial dilution. For example, the first dilution is 1X, the thirtieth is 30X, and so on. A 30X dilution means the ingredient was extracted, diluted, and filtered 30 times, before being used in the product.
Convenient – Available without a prescription, no trip to a doctor is required. And, as the popularity of homeopathic remedies grows, more products are becoming available in mainstream grocery, drug and mass retailers. In addition to Nature’s Cure, you will also find other homeopathic brands, such as Zicam, Hyland’s, Similasan and Cold-Eeze.
Inexpensive – Homeopathic medicine offers affordable internal treatment options relative to prescription drugs. For example, Nature’s Cure 2-Part Acne Treatment sells for $10 for a 1 month supply vs. Differin for $150, Benzaclin (Clindamycin) for $90, Erythromycin pads for $50, or Accutane for $450, not including doctor’s visits.

DORYX® (Prescription)
(doxycycline hyclate) Delayed-Release Tablets, 75 mg, 100 mg and 150 mg

PROS:

  • anti-inflammatory effects
  • Great rebate program
  • Fast working

CONS:

  • Upset stomach if taken on empty stomach
  • photo sensitivity reaction

Doryx is the brand name of an antibiotic used to treat acne in both teenagers and adults. It is a type of Tetracyclin called Doxycycline Hyclate; it is time-released and taken in pill form once a day. Side effects are uncommon, although it does have the potential to reduce the effectiveness of other medications.

FUNCTION
Whenever acne does not respond to topical therapy, oral antibiotics may be used instead or added to the treatment process. Physicians also commonly prescribe Doryx or other oral antibiotics as beginning therapy for acne. These antibiotics decrease bacterial colonies and also are anti-inflammatory agents. A combination of Doryx and topical retinoids, a form of vitamin A that helps reduce and eliminate acne, is even more effective. Retinoids are a form of vitamin A that helps reduce and eliminate acne. Doryx also has been shown in one study to reduce rosacea.

IDENTIFICATION
The antibiotic in Doryx, doxycycline, is a type of tetracycline invented and developed by Pfizer in the 1960s. It is used to treat many other conditions, diseases and infections. Doryx is produced by Warner Chilcott and is available in tablets of 75 mm as well as 100 mg and 150 mg. Because of the time-release action, the pills do not start working until they reach the small intestine, which reduces gastrointestinal side effects that sometimes occur with doxycycline.

CONSIDERATIONS
People typically must take Doryx for at least two to four weeks before seeing any improvement. A less expensive generic form of doxycycline hyclate is available, but since it is not time-released, it has more potential to cause stomach upset. Not all people have success at reducing acne with Doryx.

SIDE EFFECTS
Doryx reacts with many drugs and can decrease their effectiveness in some cases, including antacids, birth control pills, blood thinners and vitamins. In addition, iron supplements and milk can decrease the effectiveness of Doryx. People should inform their physicians about any other medications they are taking. Doryx can cause severe sunburn. Other side effects are uncommon and should be reported to a doctor immediately if they occur. These side effects include allergic reactions

fever, rectal or genital itching, pain when swallowing, stomach pain, bruising, weakness, fatigue, diarrhea and nausea.
